A New Approach to Allergy Treatment Comes to Portland Metro

Allergy suffers around the world agree: allergies can be debilitating. From sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and irritated skin, to even more serious reactions, living with allergies is often unpleasant and sometimes excruciating. While more than 50 million Americans experience allergies of some kind, they no longer have to suffer. A new treatment called Precision Immune Targeting, sometimes referred to as ultrasound-guided intralymphatic immunotherapy (ILIT), has revolutionized the medical community’s approach to allergy care.

“We are proud to be the first and only allergy clinic on the west coast to offer intralymphatic immunotherapy,” says Sanjeev Jain, MD, Ph.D., founder of Columbia Allergy, which has seven locations in the Portland area. “If you or a loved one have suffered from pollen allergies, mold allergies, pet allergies, or dust allergies, ILIT may very well be the allergy breakthrough you’ve been searching for.”

By safely administering an allergen directly into a patient’s lymph nodes, ILIT treatment “teaches” the immune system to build up a tolerance to common allergens. The injection is administered by a radiologist, who gives the shots four weeks apart over a series of three visits.

Much like allergy shots and sublingual therapy, ILIT relies on the body’s ability to build up a tolerance to the triggering allergen, thereby stopping the body from launching an allergic response. However, unlike the two previous treatment methods, ILIT requires fewer treatments and results are quicker, due to the direct injection into the lymph nodes. To compare, allergy shots require weekly injections for approximately seven months, and then monthly injections for 3-5 years. ILIT can bring a patient allergy relief in a matter of weeks!

Until recently, this approach was only provided at Columbia Allergy’s clinic in Fremont, California, but they have now brought it to their Gresham location here in Oregon. People who suffer from allergies due to pollen, mold, dust mites, or pet dander may be eligible for ILIT; schedule an appointment to determine if it’s right for you.
