Earth Day is April 22. What began in 1970 in the United States is now celebrated each year by 1 billion people in 192 countries. So your kids ride bikes and use water bottles, but how much do they understand about the many ways our daily actions can impact the world around us? Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to get out and make some fun family memories while teaching your kids to love and care for our beautiful planet. Recycled Crafts at Beaverton Library

What: Create your own works of art using recycled materials! Grades K-5 with family.

Oregon Garden’s Earth Day

What: Oregon Garden’s 20th Annual Earth Day festival. Each year the Oregon Garden hosts a festive Earth Day celebration, and seeing the garden in its beautiful spring bloom will make a nature lover out of almost anyone. This year’s celebration will feature kid-friendly fun like face painting, live music, sustainable crafts, and opportunities to learn about mushroom gardening or composting. Park for $5 onsite, or park for free nearby at a designated lot and hitch a free shuttle to the event.

Operation Clean Sweep

What: The 8th annual Earth Day district cleanup is more than just a day of litter and graffiti removal; it is a day to meet your neighbors, build community and celebrate at the Golden Garbage Awards. Bring gloves, water to drink and any tools that will help the clean up efforts! If you have a green thumb, bring your garden tools for weeding and prettying up green spaces. There will be coffee and snacks at check-in, and lunch after the cleanup during the Golden Garbage Award ceremony. Be sure to register online ahead of time.

SOLVE Cleanups

What: SOLVE Oregon is sponsoring cleanups in and around the Portland area for Earth Day—a LOT of them! Families can lend a hand with park cleanup, beach cleanup, native planting, invasive plant cleanup and more. Check out the website above to find a volunteer opportunity that works for you and your family, there are events planned in almost every corner of Oregon!

One Tree Planted: Earth Day in Gresham

What: Get your hands dirty and do something good for nature this Earth Day! Join One Tree Planted, the Johnson Creek Watershed Council, and the City of Gresham in restoring the habitat on Johnson Creek! Mulching around native trees and shrubs, removing invasive species, and weeding.
When: Monday, April 22
