Fit Kitchen Direct: We Tried It and Here’s What Happened {Review +Giveaway!}


Disclaimer #1: Fit Kitchen Direct offered me their Whole30 meals for a week and I agreed to write about my experience. 

Disclaimer #2: I’m not a fan of fad diets. In fact I’ve been known to call them dumb. Could be because I don’t have the willpower to follow one or could be that I just believe in moderation not elimination. I believe in eating a well-balanced diet heavy on the vegetables. I also believe in eating the things you like to eat. (And I like gluten. A lot!)

Fit Kitchen

I was skeptical to say the least. I like to cook and my whole family likes to eat! Some of us (my husband) eat a lot. Some of us (my five-year-old) only eats what we like. I figured I would be eating these meals for lunches while I fed my children pb&js and bagels and cream cheese or I’d be eating one for dinner, and my husband would be eating three and possibly still feeling hungry. And I’d still be feeding my children pb&js and bagels. 

Here’s What Really Happened

Sunday 5:00 p.m.

Meals delivered by super-friendly delivery driver. To accommodate 15 little take-out-like containers of food, I rearrange my tiny fridge. (Our family lives in a charming (read: small) third story apartment with sloped ceilings in the kitchen so no room for a normal fridge.)

Sunday 6:00 p.m.

Because it’s the first weekend of summer vacation and I haven’t quite nailed down my grocery shopping yet, and because we just got back from camping and because, well, life, I decide we’ll start our Fit Kitchen adventure immediately. 

I open up three containers of organic chopped chicken salad with Whole30-approved house-made dressing. One for me, one for my husband and one to split between my girls. The greens were beautiful and fresh, not a slimy or wilty leaf in the bunch. The chicken was tender and perfectly seasoned, and the dressing was delicious! One package was plenty for me for dinner. My husband needed more food and ate another half. 


I ate half of the Fit Kitchen turkey and kale stuffed sweet potato for lunch. My husband wasn’t home that evening so I let my kids choose mac’n cheese for dinner and I ate the second half of the stuffed sweet potato meal. I thought it needed sriracha hot sauce, but most things do, if you ask me. 

Tuesday 10:00 a.m.

It turns out if there’s delicious food in the house, I eat reasonable meals. Typically for breakfast, I eat the last pancake or the crusts from the toast or the cold leftover oatmeal before I clean the pot. Today I had half of a Fit Kitchen Mezza plate. Gah! It was delicious. From the cauliflower tabbouleh to the juicy chicken breast, it was all seasoned to perfection and prepared beautifully. I ate the second half for lunch. 

Wednesday 9:00 p.m.

Food was so easy today! I took two Fit Kitchen Direct mezza plates to the park, the kids had one (though they wouldn’t eat some of the sides and I had to supplement with a bagel for each). I ate the whole thing and it was perfect. Dinner was Fit Kitchen shredded beef lettuce cups with sautéed peppers and onions. Because all four of us were home for dinner, I added our own tortillas, extra veggies, and black beans to the meal. 

Friday 10:00 p.m. [The Verdict]

We’ve been eating Fit Kitchen Meals all week. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner some days. My kitchen is full of little take-out containers and I kind of miss Fit Kitchen meals. I didn’t have a single meal that I wouldn’t eat again.

Because of the price, it’s not reasonable to think that I would use these meals in place of cooking my own food at home, but it’s totally reasonable to use them instead of going out to eat, which many of us do 1-3 or even four times each week if you’re grabbing lunch on the go, or while you’re at work. In fact, I would say not only is it reasonable, it’s a great option. I detest spending $12 in a restaurant on a bowl of noodles with butter that my kids may eat half of just so that I can get a break from cooking and washing dishes. And I hate the feeling in my stomach and my conscience if I give in to temptation and get a fast food burger.

Fit Kitchen Direct meals are perfect for lunch or dinner, either at home or on the go. They’re healthy, delicious, and so so easy. I say go for it. You may not even notice that they’re Whole30. I didn’t.
