It’s hard to believe that after the beautiful, hot summer we’ve just had here in Portland, boot and sweater season is now upon us. Kids are asking about Halloween costumes, and I’m starting to over-indulge in pumpkin spice everything and thinking about decorating my home for the fall. Nothing says fall more than a pumpkin (or ten!) on your front porch. We are lucky to live in an area where pumpkins of all shapes and sizes grow prolifically! While you can easily pick up a pumpkin at your local grocery store if you’re in a pinch, there are literally dozens of farms and pumpkin patches within a short driving distance that make picking a pumpkin a fun, all-day adventure for you and your kids.
I’ve highlighted the pumpkin patches and farms below because of their diverse radius around our huge metropolis, and their family-friendly activities. Be sure to check their websites for hours, prices, and more details.
A Few Tips:
- If you can go on a weekday, do it! It will be much less crowded, and the farms often have weekday pricing.
- Remember that these are working farms! Be sure to keep your kids close. Many of them have tools and big equipment, as well as farm animals! You don’t want your child to end up in a pig pen!
- Be sure your child is dressed appropriately. Depending on the weather, it can get both muddy and HOT in those patches. So dress in layers, and be prepared with boots and raincoats!
