We are a theater company dedicated to bringing the joy of the theater to neurodiverse populations. We believe that everyone has a fundamental right to communicate and experience the world in a positive and meaningful way. Our camps and classes focus on teaching social skills, team work, and problem solving through the art of theater. Children gain valuable social skills and peer interactions through participating in our small group classes. Speak and Be Heard Theater is run by a certified Speech and Language Pathologist who has more than 14 years of experience working with neurodiverse populations including children with Autism, Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disabilities, and more. Head to our website to learn more about summer camps and classes and to register.
The Service Learning Project (SLP) is an action civics program for elementary, middle, and high school-aged youth. Through our in school, after school, and virtual programs, our students become leaders and agents of positive change in their communities by working together to help solve social problems of their choice. The students are in charge at SLP – every step of the process is youth-driven – and every final project has a real and profound impact.
We are currently accepting applications for our spring 2021 virtual SLP Lab. Participants will work together with a group of their peers to use their voices to make positive change in their community and beyond. The students are in charge at SLP! They will decide what issue to tackle, become experts on the problem through hands-on research, and then take concrete steps to implement their chosen solution.
Here are the details:
- What: An opportunity for young people to make real change on a social issue they are passionate about. Each Lab includes a weekly group meeting during the after-school hours along with independent work between meetings.
- When: Spring Labs begin the week of January 25 and end the week of April 26.
- Who: 4th-12th grade students from anywhere in the U.S.
- Where: Online! Group meetings will take place through Zoom.
- How: Submit your application here. We are accepting applications on a rolling basis until January 13.
- Why: Participating in action civics can help young people feel connected and empowered during this incredibly challenging time.

It started with a dream ( and a lot of hard work) and it has turned into the little company that could! joy & wonder theatre creates both productions and classes that awaken the senses, imagination and playful natures of students and explorers with our brand of immersive theatre. In immersive theatre a world is brought to life before your very eyes that you are invited to play inside. All the voices in the room are listened to and because of that storylines may be changed and shaped by the people in that particular audience on that particular day. We ask that everybody enter a space of play in order to discover how to use our skills of empathy, deep thought and total joy to create a unique theatrical experience in both classrooms and production venues. Come join us as either a student, an audience member ( explorer) or both! Located in and around North Portland we look forward to interacting and creating with you!

Every Sunday Max Tucker will be teaching drum lessons at Hum Strum Drum!
Max Tucker is a drummer and percussionist who moved to Portland from Brooklyn, NY in 2018 — where he had been based since 2000. After receiving a BFA in Jazz Performance from New School University Max went on to play with many bands; most notably (electro-pop act) Francis and the Lights, (Afrobeat collective) Asiko and (psych-rock band) Dinowalrus. Tucker has played drums on 15 albums and toured/opened for artists such as Bonnie Raitt, David Byrne, MGMT and The Charlatans. Early on in his drumming career Max discovered his love for teaching when working as a music counselor one summer at Camp Killooleet in Vermont. His goal in teaching is to give each student the tools and inspiration to discover what kind of drummer they want to be.
