We are thrilled you are considering joining Portland Mom Collective. To know what this opportunity entails, read the following guidelines. Please reach out with any questions you may have!

Who we are looking for….

Portland and the surrounding area is vibrant, quirky, beautiful, and exciting. We have all different kinds of people, living in all different kinds of families, representing all kinds of parenting styles. We want a team that celebrates these differences and thrives in a culture of respect. We love hearing from…

  • Parents in the greater Portland area who have a passion for getting out and exploring the region… and writing about it!
  • Anyone with a sense of humor who knows parenthood can be a wild rollercoaster, and is here to talk about both the ups and the downs.
  • A diverse group of writers that extends beyond biological parents — grandparents, teachers, foster parents, and anyone with an interest in supporting families and community are welcome to apply!
  • People raising or supporting those bringing up children of all ages, from wee little babies to college-aged kids!

Frequently-Asked Questions:

Why should I write for Portland Mom Collective?

Meet other local writers, small business owners, content creators, and people in the parenting space. We’re not all moms, but we are all committed to supporting the experience of motherhood. Get to know others with varied backgrounds and lifestyles while sharing community and purpose. You also get:
  • A spot on our contributor page with your bio and link to your personal portfolio.
  • Experience blogging, publishing digital content, and working with an editor, without the hassle of setting up a website.
  • The opportunity to test out products, attend special events, or participate in reviews of local businesses.
  • Potential references and experience for job searches or career development.
  • A chance to meet some pretty cool people and build this awesome community!

Do I need to be a writer?

No! In fact, a lot of people who write for PMC see it as the perfect place to test the waters to see if they enjoy regularly creating digital content. The writing can grow as we guide you.

Do I need to be a mom?

Not at all! Our content is centered around family, childhood, and community. Those all mean different things to different people. So while we might not be interested in someone who wants to write about astrophysics for every post, we recognize that uncles, teachers, neighbors, camp counselors, and so many others all contribute to the family experience. We’d love to hear your perspective!

What exactly do Portland Mom Collective contributors do?

  • Write and submit ONE post each month (ideally 400-800 words long). It must be unique content that is not published elsewhere else.
  • Interact with our team via our private contributor Facebook group.
  • Be kind, considerate, and caring towards your fellow contributors. We are an inclusive community.
  • Commit to writing for the site for one year.
  • You will need to know your way around the internet and social media, more or less, and have access to the internet to be able to add your content to the website.

Do I write about my own topics or do you assign them?

For the most part, your topic is up to you. After all, we want YOUR voice and YOUR perspective. We have a calendar with topics you can use if you’re stuck, and we can always brainstorm ideas in our contributor group. We are flexible and will help you along the way!

What should I write about?

We focus a lot on parenthood, friendship, partnership (or separation), and what it means to raise a family in our community and the world at large. Of course, a lot of our content is focused on the Portland-area, so we also love to hear about local events, outings, and businesses that local families enjoy.

How do I apply to be a PMC contributor?

Fill out the application below! Simple! We ask that you provide at least one writing sample so we can get a feel for your style (you can include more if you like, but the requirement is one). We will review ALL the applicants before reaching out, so please allow us time to close the application window, review, and connect with you! Our goal is to respond to everyone by August 15.

Your sample should be:
  • between 300-800 words (less is more!)
  • well-edited
  • topical to parenthood or life in the PNW
  • profanity-free

Deadline to apply is 10pm on July 31, 2022.
